Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Even if the term “Brazilian Jiu Jitsu” is new to you, you have likely witnessed it in action. Despite an illustrious history dating back to the early 1900s, the sport has only recently come to mainstream prominence through the broadcast of UFC events, where Brazilian Jiu Jitsu comprises the grappling aspect of MMA fights. What many UFC fans do not know is the amazing legacy that comes with training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and what it brings to the lives of people who train it – physically and mentally.  In order to understand this legacy, it’s crucial to know the history of the sport.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in New Jersey and the Gracie Family

The evolution of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is based in the legacy of Brazil’s Gracie family. It was there, in the early 1900s, that Japanese Judo expert, Mitsuyo Maeda, taught Carlos Gracie his techniques.  Carlos, in turn, passed on Maeda’s teaching to his brothers. Helio Gracie, who was too weak and frail to train with the brothers, eventually refined their techniques to maximize the ability of a weaker, smaller person to dominate and defeat a larger, stronger opponent. This evolution eventually led to the birth of what is now known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Each subsequent generation of the Gracie family has continued the tradition of training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, ultimately bringing the sport to a world stage through the original UFC fights in the 1990s.

The original UFC fights were specifically created for the Gracie family to showcase the superiority of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu over all other martial arts. Spectators watched stunned as Royce Gracie continually defeated martial arts masters previously thought to be infallible, including experts in boxing, karate, judo and tae kwon, many of whom were larger and stronger than him. So spectacular were these defeats, the Gracie academies that subsequently began forming in the US were characterized by “Gracie Challenges” where martial arts masters challenged the Gracie instructors to spontaneous fights, always being defeated by the power and effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The Gracie family maintains a prominent role in the sport today, both competitively and through the creation of affiliate schools training people in the technique and philosophy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Professional MMA fighter and 6th degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Renzo Gracie, has been one of the most instrumental Gracie family members in bringing the sport to mainstream prominence, both through his career, training UFC greats such as George St Pierre, Matt Serra, Ricardo Alameida, Frank Edgar and through his training academies.

North Jersey Mixed Martial Arts Chief Instructor, Garrett Goldsberry, trains under Renzo Gracie Black Belt, George Sernack, as well as at Renzo Gracie’s New York City headquarters.
